The incident occurred on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle was set off, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
The committee mentioned that one theory under investigation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.
Location of the Incident
Teams have been sent to the location, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the capital.
Reports suggest the explosion occurred in a car park close to a residential building.
Series of Assaults
Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.
This most recent event echoes other notable incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a source from Ukraine earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.
Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
