The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
