European Union Finance Leaders Convene to Discuss Accessing €140bn in Frozen Russian Assets for Ukraine Support
EU finance ministers are meeting in Brussels this morning to tackle the union's financial priorities, including the pressing question of financial support to the Ukrainian government.
Ukraine's President Warns Nation's Existence Relies on Partners
Kyiv's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a latest discussion that the country's survival depended on obtaining additional financial aid from international partners.
“We trust, God bless, we will get the necessary funding,” he told media outlets. If not, “We will have to find an alternative, it’s a question of our surviving. That’s why it is essential urgently. And I count on partners.”
European Authorities Advocates €140bn Reparations Loan
The European Commission continues to aim to persuade participating countries – and Belgium, which continues to bloc the proposal due to juridical concerns – to proceed with a €140 billion financial compensation based on Moscow's immobilized funds.
Commission president Ursula von der Leyen emphasized this morning that this represents “the optimal method to support Ukraine’s defence and national finances.”
Resolution Delayed Until Year-End Summit
A definitive resolution on the matter has been deferred till the EU leaders’s summit in December, with the funding needed at the start of the coming year.
Discussions Occur Amid Corruption Scandal in Kyiv
But the talks are happening during a difficult moment for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy had to move to address growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a corruption scandal in the energy sector, firing several officials who are accused of participating in a extensive bribery scheme.
Denmark's economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was asked about her reaction to the allegations, and insisted that there was determination to continue supporting Ukraine.
“Naturally, Ukraine will have to persistently focus with reforms, reinforcing every sector of their society [and] including anti-corruption … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that Europe stands firmly behind Kyiv,” she said.
