Enthusiasts anticipating the release of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined can get a head start the full month. An free-to-play playable preview will go live on the seventh of January, offering a generous glimpse into the game's beginning segments. Importantly, all progress achieved within this demo is eligible to be transferred directly into the complete game upon its subsequent debut.

Beyond Just a Straightforward Remake: The Thorough Transformation

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a ground-up reimagining of the iconic 2000 JRPG, originally released as Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. In a distinct step away from other series remakes, like the previously released HD-2D versions, this remake utilizes a charming 3D visual presentation. Environments appear to look like intricate miniature worlds, with characters featuring a delightful stylized design.

"Even with the previous port, the story was still notoriously extended. So we reached a decision that we wanted to condense the story, [and] craft an experience for modern gamers."

Major Mechanical Changes and Modernizations

Square Enix has implemented several modernizations to update the original experience. These include:

• Expedited Field Battles: Inspired by contemporary role-playing games, weaker monsters can now be dispatched directly on the overworld map without initiating a separate traditional battle screen.
• Variable Battle Pace: Gamers can accelerate combat animations to quickly power through easier encounters.
• Expanded Vocation System: A completely new vocation has been added for this reimagining. Additionally, party members gain the capacity to master a secondary vocation, significantly enhancing customization depth.

These changes seek to mitigate one of the 2000 title's frequent criticisms: its considerable playtime. The initial main quest was known to require over 100 hours to finish. This new version was expressly designed to enhance flow and reduce any filler.

Interested players will be able to start exploring the reimagined world of Dragon Quest VII for themselves when the free trial becomes available on Jan. 7. Subsequently, the complete game, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, is then scheduled to release on Feb. 5, 2026. The title will be released on a broad array of platforms, such as Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, PC, and Xbox.
