We are checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
