Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Latest Exchange
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
