In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
