No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
