Gianni Infantino has opened the door to further winter World Cups and global club championships, stating that soccer must “keep an open mind” about relocating major tournaments from the summer period.

Ongoing Conversations for Schedule Beyond 2030

Talks are currently happening about the schedule beyond 2030, a key area of concern because of heightened congestion caused by larger tournaments. A special committee has been formed to examine the issue, and FIFA itself has created a challenge by assigning the 2034 competition to Saudi Arabia. This competition will probably be held during winter months, following the Qatar model. Infantino indicated football needs to adapt to separating from Europe's summer period.

“We are already into the nitty-gritty, ongoing conversations are happening,” he said. “The discussion extends beyond one event, it involves wider thinking. Even in certain European nations during July temperatures are extreme.”

Enhancing the Competition Timetable

The president made these comments on the sidelines of the European club organization annual meeting in the Italian capital. He had expressed similar sentiments to numerous participants, stating: “We must consider the globalisation of soccer's international timetable.” He pointed to October and March as “the months you can play everywhere.”

Such a drastic reconfiguration would create disruptions, although FIFA's ability to execute its vision might face obstacles should an official protest against its imposition of the calendar, presented to EU officials previously by league organizations, triggers legal processes.

Enlarging the Global Club Tournament

Officials are examining ways to expand the Club World Cup. An expanded format could be implemented next time, potentially featuring a qualifying playoff event that reduces the total count to 32 competitors. The president referenced ambitious plans in his Italian address, stating the organization would “work to see how to expand this tournament, improved further, with greater influence.”

Possible Locations for Future Events

Spain and Morocco are frontrunners to stage the upcoming tournament, which will take place in the summer, though additional candidates have been weighed up. A quick comeback to America could be entertained and reports indicate the Asian nation, which had been due to host the tournament in 2021 before the pandemic, remains interested.

FIFA is considering staging the international tournament biennially following 2029. Qatar is the strong frontrunner to organize the 2031 competition, a scenario that might prove easier to manage should the proposed changes is achieved given a winter scheduling would be required.

Concerns About Domestic Games Abroad

Infantino expressed any permanent shift towards organizing national league matches on other continents would be a major gamble. Ongoing circumstances saw authorization provided for fixtures in the United States and Down Under, stressing this approval was on an exceptional basis. The organization's ultimate decision represents a procedural step, though the president indicated the idea caused discomfort.
