The Game Awards' Future Class Initiative Seems to Be Ended
In addition to honoring video games in different award categories, TGA in the past highlighted a Future Class program. Those selected as part of the Future Class were intended to represent the “promising, courageous, and diverse future” of video games, similar to how certain annual lists feature key figures. Yet, this initiative is coming to an end, as confirmed by program organizers.
More Than Simply Honor: The Role of the Program
The program was more than a tribute to exceptional personalities in the video game industry. It functioned as a center for career networking and career advancement. While some alumni shared gratitude for being part of Future Class, some expressed that it was insufficient for those involved. Complaints was directed at various elements of the program, including the lack of assistance to be present at the ceremony to not paying for advising recent participants.
Recent Issues and Initiative Hiatus
The program seemed to be paused in the current year, when TGA left out the award in its programming. This absence followed a 2023 controversy where a number of those in the program endorsed a statement encouraging the show to leverage its influence to voice support for a humanitarian situation.
"You gave us the responsibility of representatives of a improved world — accordingly, our duty towards you and all the gamers world-wide drives us to voice our views," the statement read.
It additionally claimed that the games community often disregarded Black and brown people, and called on professionals in the space to improve.
Formal Confirmation and Online Changes
While this is the second consecutive year that TGA has not nominated a Future Class cohort, event organizers had not formally declared its cancellation before. The absence has been noted, partly, due to the obvious deletion of any trace of the program on the official Game Awards website. The key organizer did not immediately respond to a media inquiry.
Next year’s Game Awards are scheduled for the 11th of December.
