The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
