For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

Like many elements this season, the truth about the mine shaft incident was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about his research, the case would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would later pass on to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
