The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
