Moments before the announcement, a trepidatious idea flashed through the golfer's mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star this time."

"This has been a great night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Golf was honored in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can capitalize on that."

In this instance, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was clear, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to enjoy a blockbuster evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were named the top squad.

Non-Stop Adventures

But rather than stay for the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already thinking about his next sporting adventure. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.

"The last 24 hours have been a frantic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Hunger for More

Nevertheless, McIlroy stated he has no intention to become complacent, even after completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a more to give in me," he remarked.

"More majors, order of merit titles, international events, that's great. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the most important thing."

Squad Celebration

At the same time, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the team award, also applauded golf's remarkable night and his great friend's award.

"These become the times that will stay with us forever so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is amazing," he commented. "And to be there Rory win, I think he is so worthy so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Looking Ahead

His goal is to secure his maiden major next year but he understands McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to work on," the 34-year-old said.

United Hopes

Prior to his departure, an additional topic arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"If they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a smile. "There is progress. There's a hint of positivity around."

Following a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is looking on the positive aspects.
