The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
