Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
