What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
