When Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed pops reverberating around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Exiting her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her something was wrong.

While standing on the road, conversing with a duo who had run up the hill in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching from behind. The person was a lifeguard, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting towards something that surely every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to numerous those hurt.

Collective Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the community, with the beach facility beside the site of the attack serving as a impromptu hospital. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, for instance rushing into the ocean to rescue people needing help.

After the attack, messages of appreciation flooded in. An online statement expressed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “goodness will always overcome hatred”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a statement, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive sentiments and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the care shown towards our team,” the group wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the team acted heroically from the second the shooting began through to late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our iconic shores protected for visitors, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the face of such hatred.”
