Zverev Battles Felix Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Showdown

Introduction

The occupational hazards of round-robin tennis typically lead to at this point of the ATP Finals fans frequently find themselves confused, searching around for a mathematical tool and striving to determine the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. But today's game between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the victor earns a final four matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this championship finale; the unsuccessful competitor goes home.

Zverev is the favourite for this: the elite athlete is the more accomplished player, has been the champion at this event previously on two instances and holds the advantage in their personal record 6-3, winning both the games they've played on an enclosed hard court.

But … this is the surface on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed the bulk of his trophies, he is full of confidence after his impressive recovery against Ben Shelton on Wednesday and he eliminated Zverev in the US Open early stage in August. Plus, the court pace is quicker in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which provides an additional advantage in the Canadian's favor.

Should Zverev be cautious, as he did against the Italian, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his stinging serves and bold strategy, it might very well be the North American athlete – the former prodigy who was earlier slated in front of the younger champions to replace the legendary trio – who secures the uncertain distinction of facing the top-ranked player the next day.

Play begins: at around 20:30 in the host city, 7.30pm GMT.
